DIY Rubber Stamps: Customising Rubber Stamps With Craft Foam

Looking to create and DIY your own rubber stamps? One good method of creating your own makeshift rubber stamps would be to make use of craft foam as craft foam is a user friendly material. To begin, there are some steps you will have to take note of. Here’s how you can start creating your own rubber stamps:

First- begin by preparing all you will need for crafting your own rubber stamps. Decide on the size you want your rubber stamps to be before purchasing sheets of craft foam, a mount (either wood or acrylic), repositionable glue, scissors or crafting knife, as well as an ink pad. All these materials can be found in crafting or specialty stores as well as online stores. If you know of rubber stamp suppliers, you can most likely purchase some of these items through them as well.

You can then choose to draw or rub and transfer your desired rubber stamp design onto your craft foam. Make sure the tracing is dark enough for you to be able to follow as a template for caving. Making use of your crafting knife or carving tools, carve and cut the design you want onto your craft foam. Keep the lines as smooth and even as possible in this process and remember to cut away from you instead of towards you to prevent accidental self injury.

To maximise efficiency of your craft foam rubber stamps, make sure to keep your lines clean. A good recommendation for your stamps would be simple but bold rubber stamp images instead of complex designs. This way, you retain the crispness of your images while minimising the potential of having ink drying and clotting small areas. Once you have finished cutting your craft foam rubber stamp, do a test print with ink- determine if your rubber stamp comes out the way you want it to. If you are satisfied, you can go ahead with mounting your craft foam rubber stamp.

Using your repositionable glue, attach your craft foam to either your wood mount or acrylic mount and wait for it to dry. Once it is dry, you can ink and use for your material. Craft foam rubber stamps typically absorb more ink than their regular rubber stamp counterparts so make sure you have inked it well using the ink pad before you apply the stamp. You can also combine craft foam rubber stamps with paint as well as other specialty inks or dyes. Once you have finished using your craft foam rubber stamps, clean them well. Avoid chemical cleaners unless the instructions on your craft foam sheet packaging states otherwise since foam stamp surfaces can be damaged or distorted.

By following these tips, you should be able to customise and create your own rubber stamps with craft foam. Do not be discouraged if you are unable to get the design perfect on the first go, the more you practise, the easier it is and the better you will be able to create your rubber stamps.
